St. Francis Cube
Not exactly sure what they’re doing, but in the meantime the giant plastic cube in the middle of historic downtown Santa Fe makes for a fun juxtaposition.

So a couple weeks ago I stumbled onto the website of a really wonderful non-profit called Mother Bear. Their goal as stated on their homepage:
“…is dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, by giving them a gift of love in the form of a hand-knit or crocheted bear.”

“The simple gift of a hand-knit bear with a tag signed by the knitter has touched children with the message that they are unconditionally loved.”
Since Mel is an expert knitter and I’m just learning how to crochet I figured this would be a wonderful project for us to do together. Our patterns just arrived in the mail today. Check back for updates!
Yay! A quarter of a century old. Go me!
Also, Melissa is a culinary genius. Best cake ever.
Melissa and I now have another haunted hotel under our belt! This time our destination was the beautiful Plaza hotel in Las Vegas, NM.

And while nothing spooky happened we still had a great time. The Plaza hotel is a beautiful Victorian hotel with quite a bit of history. The highlight of the stay for me was eating in Booker T’s Saloon where Doc Holliday had shot a man for cheating him at cards.
Is that a ghost in the window? Afraid not. The Plaza Hotel had various ghostly figures projected onto the windows of the adjacent building. These figures were telling stories of the old west through speakers setup on the plaza. It was pretty neat, but we were way too cold to hang around outside listening for long.
For Melissa’s birthday this year I decided to take her on a train trip from New Mexico into Colorado to see the aspens changing color. We were a little bit late in the season for the aspens, but it was still great fun.
More pics up on my flickr page.
My laptop died last week, and when I say died, I mean it really died. It’s a pretty little aluminum corpse…
So there I was just browsing the net when it randomly shut itself off. I figured it wasn’t a big deal, the battery had probably just run down and caused it to auto-shutdown. That’s happened before, no big deal, however this was not the case. When I tried to turn it back on all I heard was a couple of spinning fans and dead silence. No beep. No HD noises. Nothing. I called applecare and they had me try all the normal stuff, resetting the pRAM, trying to boot in verbose mode, trying to boot to the install CD, etc… nothing worked. So now I’m waiting for apple to send me a box so I can send my poor little laptop to the doctor.
This sucks.

Somebody contacted me via Flickr and asked to use one of my pics.
Neat!
Mel’s dad was visiting this weekend so we decided to go down to Carlsbad to see the caverns. It seems like that place gets cooler and cooler every time I go, but I suppose I’m just learning to appreciate it more.
We got to see the swarm of bats leaving the cave this time, which is cool since I hadn’t seen them since I was a little kiddo. Unfortunately they don’t allow you to take photos or video of the bats mass exodus, but I did manage to get some neat pictures from inside the cave. Have a gander at my Carlsbad Caverns set here.
…
… notice a similarity? Yea me too.
