On my pad…

Decided to take down some notes in notepad and found the following:

Your consciousness affects the behavior of subatomic particles
- or -
Particles move backwards as well as forwards in time and appear in all possible places at once

Wish I could remember what my thought process was when scribbled that… hmm…

Skittles caught a Hawk!

Ok it’s probably just a woodpecker, but still, this thing was huge! It’s hard to tell from the picture, but for a bit of perspective, that beak is probably 3+ inches long. Melissa hid in the bedroom while I tried to catch him with a towel. He made it very clear he didn’t want anything to do with me or my towel. He circled my living room a couple times, slammed into a mirror and then flew out onto our patio. Looks like he chipped his beak on my mirror. Poor guy.

After a bit of googling Mel figured out that it was a Northern flicker Woodpecker.

Being sick is boooooring

So, yea, being sick is really boring. There is only so much TV a guy can watch before getting all loopy headed and depressed, right? Right. So I’ve been trying to come up with little projects to keep entertained while not over exerting myself…. you know what that means right? Yea, lots of nerding out on the computer…

Songbird
I decided a little while ago that I’ve had enough with Itunes. I never really liked the interface, and I especially didn’t like that it started deleting my music without telling me. So I did a bit of research and happily discovered Songbird.

Also I discovered I really like Dr. Steel

Songbird is a full featured completely free open source music management application developed by Mozilla. Perfect! I had actually discovered songbird a couple weeks ago, but it wasn’t until my downtime that I had a chance to move my music library over and get it all configured. I’m still getting used to it, but my first impressions are all great. Just like firefox it supports a multitude of awesome plugins, and if you want to change the appearance of the app there are plenty of “feathers” for it too. Feathers, cute huh?

New Dock
I had known it was possible to modify the dock under Leopard for a while, I just hadn’t had the time or motivation to do it. Well… this week I’ve had nothing but time so I figure I should get to it.

Truedock + Power Indicators + Dark Separator

The process was actually much easier than I thought it was going to be. All you need to do is replace the default “scurve”png files in your dock resources directory. You can find all the required info here as well as quite a few pre-made doc images. I ended up mixing and matching to create something that worked for me.

AdBlock Plus + Add-Art
I also installed some new firefox addons… AddBlock plus in conjunction with Add-Art has made for more pleasant web browsing. Addblock plus blocks ads and Add-art replaces them with art. My one complaint has been that so far the “art” is almost more obnoxious than the ads are. I mean, wtf is this?

“this was the worst I’d ever cut up before. I cut open my old appendix wound, stuck pins on the inside of the wound and swallowed a broken light bulb.”

Seriously? I mean, in context I’m sure this is a powerful story… but I really don’t want to see it while checking my Hotmail.

Add-Art cycles the art every 2 weeks, so I’m willing to wait it out and hope the next round of art is more palatable.

mah brain!

I haven’t gotten the results from my MRI yet, but in the meantime… here is my brain!

Still frames can be found here. It’s a little bit creepy being able to see inside my own head…

St. Francis Cube

Not exactly sure what they’re doing, but in the meantime the giant plastic cube in the middle of historic downtown Santa Fe makes for a fun juxtaposition.

Happy Birthday Me!

Yay! A quarter of a century old. Go me!

Also, Melissa is a culinary genius. Best cake ever.

One of my pics in an article!

Somebody contacted me via Flickr and asked to use one of my pics.
Neat!

Maxxed my ram!

8 gigs baby! oh yeaaaaaa…

Unfortunately this is on my work computer…

Next step: my laptop…
Oh yes Mr. Laptop you’re next! I’m comin’ for ya.

Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Weekend Platelet Donation by Apheresis

arm.jpg

I donated platelets this weekend and it was actually pretty fun. I was hesitant at fist since the procedure takes a little over two hours, but the process was really interesting. They pump blood out of your arm for about 30 seconds at a time during which they’re spinning the freshly collected blood in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. After the platelets are collected the pump reverses direction and sends the blood back into your arm. This process repeats until the desired amount of platelets are collected.

It’s almost like a game really. They have a monitor showing you what is going on and how much time you have remaining as well as a little pressure indicator. You have to maintain the blood pressure in the vein they’ve tapped by squeezing a little ball. When the blood is being pumped out of your arm you have to squeeze to raise the pressure and when it’s being returned you have to relax to lower it. Fun stuff!

They have a computer set up for each donor to watch movies or browse the net so it’s a pretty pleasant process overall. After it was all over I ended up giving 7.5 ml of platelets. The technician told me I had an abnormally high platelet count of 295,000 per ml and could donate more next time if I wanted.

*note* those aren’t actually my platelets in that bag.. just a pic I got from wikipedia :-D
